Meet Alex Sharry

Alex is a globally recognized teacher and teacher-trainer in the method of Katonah Yoga. She has been teaching locally and abroad for 15 years and has been on the founding team of two of New York City’s most popular yoga studios – Sky Ting and The Studio. Alex’s mission is to seamlessly combine the esoteric and pragmatic in order to maintain teaching as an inclusive and generous practice.

What drew you to Katonah Yoga?

Honestly...everything! The practice, the feeling in my body after class, the poeticism and language of the theory, the adjustments, the communal interaction. I remember how bright everyones' eyes were, like they were lit up with energy and life and how youthful all the students and teachers seemed. I thought to myself, "I want THAT. This practice must really work!"

Is there a piece of theory that has most resonated with you?

It often changes, but the one that has stuck with me longest is the concept of organizing yourself. No matter what's going on or where you are in life, if you can put yourself on a grid and remember where you are, you will remember who you are.

Who has been most influential to you in teaching or practicing yoga?

Nevine and Abbie are my two teachers. Abbie teaches me how to teach and how to frame my life and relationships with this material. Nevine teaches me how to find grace and peace and to see the bigger picture of it all.

When you’re not practicing or teaching yoga, what do you enjoy doing?

I love reading, going on walks in our small village with my dog and husband, I love movie marathons...plopping on the couch and watching a double or triple feature. And my best day is one where I wake up and do something adventurous and unplanned, be it a day-trip or a slew of activities that weren't on any schedule but just fall in place naturally.

Any tips for practitioners that are new to Katonah Yoga?

The physical practice is going to feel so hard and frustrating in the beginning. Stick with it, it gets easier. And the way it gets easier is not so much by building a muscle for it, but when you start to understand what you're doing and why. The second a lightbulb goes off and you're able to make a connection between the mind and body, you're in.

Join Alex Sharry in studio on January, 20th for the first session of The Katonah Master Series.
